The first anniversary of the official opening of the Chancay Port jointly built by China and Peru
Chancay Port (English: Chancay Port; Spanish: Puerto de Chancay) is located in the Lima Region of Peru, in the Chancay Bay on the Pacific coast of South America. It is a hub port for Peru and Latin America and a gateway port to the Pacific. It is a "Belt and Road" cooperation project between China and Peru.
Chancay Port will start construction in June 2021; construction of the wharf's superstructure will be carried out on August 22, 2022; construction of the main structure of the wharf will be completed on May 10, 2024; the port will be opened on November 14, 2024. As of November 2024, Chancay Port has a total of 4 terminal berths; it can achieve a design throughput capacity of 1 million TEUs per year in the near future and 1.5 million TEUs in the long term.

November 14, 2025, is the first anniversary of the official opening of Chancay Port, a port jointly built by China and Peru. In this "smart port" located 80 kilometers north of Lima, the capital of Peru, port machinery equipment such as automated remote-controlled quay cranes, intelligent driving container trucks, and automated rail cranes are operating efficiently.
This is China's first interoperable "Suzhou-Chancay" shipping route to Peru's Chancay Port. The cross-border cargo under Chinese customs supervision reaches 52,000 tons, mainly automobiles, engineering machinery, grinding balls and other commodities. The shipping time has been shortened from 35 days to 23 days. In the past year since the opening of the port, the New Land-Sea Corridor between Asia and South America around the Port of Chancay has opened three main lines and four branch lines. The import and export trade volume of the "Chancay-Shanghai" route has grown exponentially, significantly promoting the two-way flow of goods between China and Latin America and facilitating global trade.
Since the opening of Chancay Port, the cumulative container throughput has exceeded 270,000 TEUs, handled approximately 1.36 million tons of bulk cargo, and generated approximately 697 million Peruvian soles in tax revenue, strongly supporting regional economic development. This is the “answer sheet” handed over by Chancay after one year of development from port opening, trial operation to full commercialization.
"China is currently Peru's largest trading partner, and bilateral relations between Peru and China have reached unprecedented heights." Gonzalo Talavera, Peru's charge d'affaires in China, said in an interview.
Relying on the new route from Ecuador to China launched in February this year, the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil and Shanghai, China are closely connected through Chancay. According to statistics from the Ecuadorian Banana Exporters Association, from January to July this year, Ecuador’s banana exports to China increased by 37.67% year-on-year. In July, the branch line from Chancay to the southern Peruvian city of Arequipa was opened, shortening the land transportation distance of meat from Brazil to Peru from 4,000 kilometers to 1,300 kilometers. In late October this year, the Chancay route added new calls to Haiphong, Vietnam, etc., to facilitate the rapid delivery of goods in Southeast Asia and Latin America.
