The European Union and Australia reached a comprehensive trade agreement on Tuesday (March 24). This agreement, reached after nearly eight years of negotiation, will eliminate tariffs on most goods from both sides and provide greater convenience for the EU to access Australia's key mineral resources.
Under this much-anticipated trade agreement, the EU will eliminate about 98% of import tariffs on Australian goods, covering wine, dairy products, wheat, barley and seafood. In exchange, Australia will eliminate more than 99% of tariffs on EU goods, focusing on dairy products, automobiles and chemical products.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement: "In turbulent times, we send a strong message to the world - friendship and cooperation are crucial."
She added: "Although the EU and Australia are far apart, they are highly consistent in their world views. With the establishment of new dynamic cooperative relations in areas such as security, defense and trade, the two sides are further getting closer."
Von der Leyen met with Australian Prime Minister Albanese earlier this week, bringing an end to the trade negotiations that began in 2018.
Albanese said at a press conference on Tuesday that the agreement will promote the development of Australia's economy and that the EU's elimination of almost all import tariffs on Australia's key minerals will help stabilize global supply chains.
It is reported that this bilateral negotiation reached a deadlock in 2023. The main differences were: Australia wanted to expand its mutton and beef export quotas to the EU, while the EU demanded more access to key mineral resources and lower tariffs. As the Trump administration increased foreign tariffs, the two sides subsequently accelerated the negotiation process.
At present, the EU mainly imports mineral products and agricultural products from Australia, while exporting machinery, transportation equipment and chemical products to it.
Almost all Australian manufacturing products and mineral resource exports will achieve zero tariffs when entering the EU market. As Australia's second largest source of foreign investment, the EU's investment scale is expected to increase by more than 87%.
The agreement also contains a bilateral safeguard mechanism: if the surge in Australian imports has an impact on the EU market, the EU can take measures to protect sensitive local industries.

Diversification of trade relations
In the past year, the EU has accelerated the conclusion of trade agreements with many parties to spread risks in economic, trade and security cooperation. This trend has become more pronounced as the United States is seen as increasingly unreliable.
U.S. President Trump has imposed high tariffs on allies, including those affecting the rules-based trading system. At the same time, he has launched raids in Venezuela and Iran without notifying allies in advance, further exacerbating tensions with traditional partners.
Speaking in the Australian Parliament on the situation in the Middle East on Tuesday, von der Leyen said: "No country can be immune to the geopolitical and economic impact of the Iran war."
The current regional conflict has rekindled market concerns about energy supply constraints and rising inflation in Europe. Europe relies heavily on imported crude oil and natural gas.
The EU reached a trade agreement with India earlier this year, which will eliminate or reduce tariffs on more than 90% of goods; it completed trade negotiations with Indonesia last year.
In addition, the European Commission said on Monday that the trade agreement with South America's "Mercosur" is expected to enter into force provisionally in May.
