Asia’s economic growth is expected to reach 4.5% in 2026
On March 24, the 2026 Boao Forum for Asia released the "Asian Economic Prospects and Integration Process 2026 Annual Report" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report"), stating that the GDP of Asian economies will continue to rise as a proportion of the world economy. In terms of purchasing power parity, it is expected to increase from 49.2% in 2025 to 49.7% in 2026. Asia remains the main growth engine of the world economy, with an expected growth rate of 4.5% in 2026. The report also shows that the current Asian economy is showing five trends including comprehensive empowerment of digital intelligence in the process of accelerating transformation.
"Despite the challenges of slowing global economic growth and increasing uncertainty in the international trade environment, the Asian economy still shows strong resilience." Zhang Yuyan, dean of the School of International Political Economics at the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that by region, South Asia's economic growth rate is expected to be 6.3% this year, leading Asia; Central Asia is expected to grow by 5.3%; East Asia is expected to grow by 4.3%; West Asia's economic growth faces more uncertainties, and the economic growth rate is expected to be 2.5%.
In 2026, the external macro policy environment faced by Asian economies will undergo profound changes. The report predicts that most economies in Asia will continue to be in the fiscal expansion range this year, and some economies will actively carry out fiscal consolidation under debt pressure. In addition, the monetary policies of most Asian economies are expected to be further loosened, but factors such as the Federal Reserve policy and the trend of the US dollar will bring uncertainty.
According to the report, the current accelerating economic transformation in Asia is showing a series of structural and trend changes, which are highlighted in five aspects, including digital intelligence fully empowering Asian economic and trade development, low-carbon development assisting the green transformation of Asian industries, the aging of the population bringing multi-dimensional impacts to the Asian economy, the external environment having a more prominent impact on intra-regional economic and trade relations, and regional cooperation strongly supporting Asian economic development and integration.
