Panama Canal plans to invest $8 billion in the next decade

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has unveiled an investment plan, including water supply, LPG pipelines, road infrastructure and container terminals, aiming to strengthen its strategic role in global trade and ensure long-term sustainable development.

Specifically, on September 16, Panama’s Minister of Canal Affairs Jose Ramón Icaza, Director of the Canal Authority Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, and Deputy Director and Sustainability Officer Ilya Espino de Marotta introduced the ambitious investment plans for the next decade at a media event.

The Panama Canal vision is based on two pillars: First, water security. Secondly, achieve sustainable growth by diversifying commercial activities and expanding transportation capacity without increasing water use. The Panama Canal will surpass the trans-ocean channel and become a logistics hub, enhancing Panama's competitive advantage in world business.

    Strategic Projects

Panama Canal Authority Director Ricaurte Vásquez Morales said the Panama Canal will invest more than $8 billion in strategic projects in four areas: water supply; LPG pipeline; roads connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as container and ro-to-roll terminals.

Rio Indio Reservoir will provide water to more than 1 million Panamanians and improve the reliability of canal transport, thereby maximizing its value.

The Panama Canal Authority Director said, "The canal depends on rainfall." After the 2023 drought, the canal was forced to reduce the daily transit to 24 ships, and Panama Canal management needs to find additional water sources because locks rely on freshwater for operation.

Construction of the dam is expected to begin in 2027 and will not be completed until 2032, with an estimated cost of $1.6 billion, of which $400 million will be used to compensate and relocate about 2,500 residents from different communities.

The transocean energy corridor will include a 76-km pipeline and two terminals that can transport up to 2.5 million barrels of energy products per day and connect the Atlantic and Pacific coasts without crossing the locks.

Meanwhile, feasibility studies for the Port of Corozal are underway, with results expected to be drawn in the first quarter of 2026 and construction is scheduled to begin in 2028. The Port of Corozal will be integrated into a land-based logistics platform connected by road and railway.

The Panama Canal Authority said it will ensure that the development process of all projects is open and transparent. The Panama Canal reiterates its commitment to Panama and the world to continue to be the engine of global trade and driver of economic growth, while creating a more equitable, resilient and sustainable future for all Panamanians.
