The European Union has passed the first round of tariff countermeasures against the United States

On April 9, following countries such as Canada, the European Union also joined the formal ranks of trade countermeasures against the United States. EU member states voted on the 9th to pass the first round of tariff countermeasures against the United States, imposing tariffs of up to 25% on a range of U.S. products.

The European Commission issued a statement on the same day saying that this round of countermeasures is aimed at responding to the U.S. steel and aluminum tariff measures. The statement pointed out that the U.S. government's recent tariff increases lack a legitimate basis, not only harming the economic interests of both Europe and the United States but also having an adverse impact on global economic stability. The EU has always advocated resolving differences through dialogue and consultation to promote a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial solution. The EU side stated that if the United States agrees to reach a fair and balanced negotiation outcome, these countermeasures can be suspended.

According to the statement, after the EU member states voted through it, the next round of countermeasures will be implemented after the European Commission completes its internal procedures, and the tariffs will begin to be levied on April 15. According to previous reports from multiple media outlets, the scope of the next round of tariffs on U.S. goods is wide-ranging, including soybeans, poultry, rice, fruits, nuts, timber, textiles, and more.

It is reported that there has been almost no progress in the US-EU trade negotiations.

Trump authorized a 90-day tariff suspension. Is the United States afraid?
